A gerontology health care certificate is awarded to college level students who have completed an interdisciplinary set of courses that focus mainly on nursing and health, adult education, leisure and recreation, physical education, social work, psychology, and sociology. This type of program is for students who wish to gain knowledge and skills to prepare them for a career that involves working with the elderly. The student should have an ability to work with older adults and have the capacity to be sensitive and compassionate.
In addition to taking the courses to prepare you for working with the elderly, most colleges and universities also require that you put in several hours doing a practicum or an internship at a facility that cares for the elderly. This will give you a well-rounded education in the gerontology field and will make you eligible to obtain the certification so that you may pursue a career in the field.
A trained gerontologist can find work in a wide variety of places that include nursing homes, mental health centers, social services agencies, advocacy groups and community centers for the aged.
