The US Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education grant program or TEACH that provides grants of up to $4000 per year to students who want to become teachers in either public or private schools that serve students from low income families.

In exchange for receiving a TEACH grant, you have to agree to teach as a full time teacher in a high need field in a school that serves low income students. You have to teach for at least four years of completing the program of study for which you received the grant.

If you fail to complete this service, all amounts of the TEACH grant money that you got will be converted into a Stafford Loan of which you must repay to the US Dept of Education. You will also be charged interest from the date of the grant’s disbursement.

TEACH grant recipients are given a six month grace period prior to entering repayment if a grant is converted into a loan. Some of the high-need fields are English, math, reading, science and special education.
