A college major is nothing more than a collection of classes that revolve around a subject such as math, a theme or a professional field. In order to graduate from college you have to choose a major and complete a certain number of classes that fall under this major.

The major you choose will not predict or guarantee your future. Many students find out that the jobs they are working in following college have nothing to do with their majors at all-and this is perfectly fine.

If you find that one field of study does not satisfy you then you should consider a minor A minor is much like a major but a minor does not require that you take as many classes. Some undergrads opt to work on two majors at one time and they are often in two totally different subjects.

A double major takes longer to complete but you will be in great standing when it comes time to find a career upon college degree graduation. Before signing up for a double major you should be sure that you have the time and the dedication it takes to handle the heavy work load that comes with a double major.

Congratulations! You have been accepted into college. Once you have gotten that acceptance letter in your hand you will need to send in your deposit to reserve your spot on campus.

There are a few things you should keep in mind when you have been accepted to a college or university and we will mention a few of them here.

Be sure to be polite to the schools that rejected you, if there were any. If you’ve developed a professional relationship with an admissions officer consider writing them a short letter thanking them for what they did for you .

Remember that even though a college has offered you a place in their freshman class-they can still take it back if they have reason to. This can happen so avoid behavior that would cast any doubt on the good picture you have painted for yourself.

There are probably many people who helped you to become accepted into college so be sure to thanks these people which may include your teachers and counselor.

Last fall, President Obama announced to a joint session of Congress that America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the entire world by the year 2020.

Education experts have interpreted Obama’s announcement as a marker of a major shift in federal higher education policy and the making of a push for an expanded role by the federal government within higher education.

Obama’s “Race to the top” initiative-the K-12 reform effort focuses on school districts preparing students for college is also a significant indicator of this possible expansion.

Some people feel that these upcoming changes in the federal role will become a way of rewarding institutions or states that have greater success and ways of bonding research efforts and demonstration programs to try to find things that work in getting students through school successfully.

Obama has called on all Americans to attend at least one year of college and this moves up the threshold from public education limited to K-12 and this move is being seen as a symbolic gesture.

Experts worry whether the Obama administration can be able to develop an effective strategy that builds consensus in Congress and among state officials around the effort to focus on college completion.

Federal government agencies are looking for candidates for career positions and they are looking to recruit African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans as well as Asian-Americans now more than ever before. Minorities made up 33 percent of the federal workforce in 2008, meaning that they were over-represented in the federal government compared to the remainder of the U.S. workforce.

Colleges and universities who are active in internship programs are increasing the pipeline of qualified federal employees. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities National Internship Program (HNIP) brought nearly 700 students to Washington D.C. In 2009 for jobs at federal agencies such as the FBI, Census Bureau, State Department and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

In order for students to become eligible for the HNIP program they must have a 3.0 grade-point average and be eligible to work in the United States. Some federal agencies also require a citizenship requirement.

Applicants must also write an essay and provide proof that they have attended college.

HNIP is not the only internship program that provides students with an opportunity to work in Washington. The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) is an internship program that has served students from black colleges and universities since 1997.

While public universities and community colleges across the United States are coping with the double whammy of state budget cuts and increased student demand, public universities are plugging the gaps in higher education.

For example, the University of Phoenix in Suisun City has seen a ten percent increase in community college students who wish to complete the required course work to complete their college degrees.

As the current recession continues, many laid-off workers are flocking to community colleges to become re-trained and to learn new job skills.

Many community colleges are seeing increased enrollment figures but they are also faced with dramatic budget shortfalls. This is forcing many colleges to cut some of their credit classes as well as non-credit classes, which forces students to check out private universities.

In past years, people have counted on community colleges to provide an affordable way to go to college but now most of these two year schools are over-crowded and are turning students away.

Private colleges cost nearly twice as much as community colleges but students can check out grants and scholarships to help them pay for their college educations.

At San Francisco’s City College, students jammed into the classroom for the first session for the class Microcomputer Applications for Business 101 and at least twelve students found themselves standing in the aisles and doorway.

Normally the school would hire another instructor to teach the class when there is an overflow of students but the state’s $26 billion deficit means that there is no extra money for hiring. Students are finding that they could face losing their financial aid as well as their campus jobs if they did not have a full class schedule but there is little the school can do. There simply are not enough instructors to handle the over-flow of students so those extra student were turned away.

State budget cuts and the recession are endangering some of the most important foundations of the American dream-the low priced and high quality public colleges that were created to provide education to those who wished to succeed.

Community colleges and state universities that have financial problems are far more important than the current layoffs at elite schools like Harvard and Yale. These schools education 2 percent of America’s college students while the public colleges educated 74 percent.

The state of California is the most extreme case but many other states are raising tuition and closing classroom doors as well as cutting aid. Tuition will be increased by 15 percent in Florida for example and students at Stony Brook University in New York will see costs go up $1000 just this year.
