Many people today are choosing to enroll in accelerated degree programs as a quick way to earn a college degree. Before committing to an accelerated program you should consider a few things.

A normal undergrad degree takes up to four years to finish. An accelerated degree program can be completed in as little as 36 months. Of course, you will save a considerable amount of money with an accelerated program, but you also have to have a considerable amount of time available in order to keep up with the demands of this type of a program.

The experience in an accelerated program is much more intense than a regular, four year program and you have to be a highly motivated person in order to succeed. The coursework is the same for both types of programs but the accelerated program requires that you finish assignments much quicker.

Many people who sign up for accelerated programs do so in order to boost their current careers and to open new doors of opportunity. These people are looking for career changes and find that accelerated programs are their best bet concerning these career goals.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has come forward to give $12.9 million to advance technology at community colleges to help to improve virtual learning environments. At the same time Congress is still grappling with legislation that could pour $500 million into the development of online community college courses.

The main goal of both efforts is designed to help students who lack study skills to succeed and to teach students how to balance studying with the pressures and responsibilities of family and work. The goal is to integrate new technologies into the teaching and course delivery systems of the community colleges.

The National Center for Academic Transformation received $1.8 million of the funding to assist community colleges to revamp teaching methods in developmental math courses while five million dollars went to the Monterey Institute for Technology and Education to make mathematics course materials. Carnegie Mellon University’s Community College Open Learning Initiative received $2.5 million to assist other colleges to develop web-based open learning arenas for some courses.

This is indeed great news for community colleges in the United States-which have seen a tremendous increase in enrollment of college degree programs over the past three years.

Almost two-thirds of all college students graduate with their college degrees in hand owing a student loan. This is no surprise considering the state of the economy and the ever-rising costs of higher education. The bad part is that many students enter college without knowing how many loans they have, who owns the loans and how much they will have to pay back in the future.

Remember that a debt will not go away if you ignore it. In fact, ignoring a debt is a terrible choice. If you need to know your loan details then you should make the effort to find out all you can.

Most loans come with a six month grace period and when your loan comes to term you should have your repayment plan already set up. You can use the loan tracking department at the Department of Education’s website to help you figure out how many student loans you have and the amount owed.

If you cannot make payments, you should look into deferment or forbearance. If you do not qualify for deferment or forbearance you may want to consolidate your loans. This way you have reduced monthly payments to make and the term of the loan is extended.

Income based repayment is a new federal student loan repayment system for students who graduate with a college degree with a small income. This federal program makes it easier for students to repay their loans by putting a cap on the payment based on how big their family is and by how much money they are earning.

This is very beneficial for those students who have graduated from expensive programs like law or medical school. Students in law and medical school can easily owe $100,000.

In order to become eligible for the repayment program you must qualify by showing that you are under financial hardship. It is actually quite easy to qualify and you become eligible if the initial monthly payment exceeds 15% of your income.

Under the IBR plan, a student‘s financial information is put under assessment every year. The student must submit their information each year and base it on changes in income and family size. A student is also allowed to leave IBR whenever he or she wishes but the borrower must make a phone call to say they want out.

The best thing about IBR is that after 25 years of monthly payments, the remaining balance the student owes is forgiven.

Today, nearly 4.6 million African Americans now have four year college degrees. This is according to a study in the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. The not so good news is that even though there are more college educated blacks in the US than ever before, the gap with other minority groups is considerable.

There are nearly twice as many black women than men who are earning master’s degrees today. However, black men have the lead over black women in the number of professional degrees in medicine and law with men having 88,000 professional degree while their women counterparts have 62,000.

African Americans as a whole seem to be making great progress in higher education compared to earlier generations. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 3,200,000 blacks have bachelor degrees, another 1,000,000 have a four year degree or a master’s degree.

A total of 150,000 blacks have professional degrees and another 136,000 have doctorates. These numbers give proof to the fact that the black community has made great progress when you consider that in 1920 only 10,000 blacks had college degrees. It is hoped that the trend will continue.

Every parent and grandparent should start saving for their child’s college education when the child is first born. In spite of the ever-rising costs associated with earning a college degree, students and parents still consider higher education a critical and worthwhile investment in the future.

An annual study called “How America Pays for College” was conducted by Gallop for Sallie Mae Corp and it found that 56 percent of families said the eliminated some colleges due to their high prices. Also, nearly 60 percent said that they are worried about the rising tuition costs while 35 percent classified themselves as being “very worried”.

On average, parents pay for 45 percent of college costs. The average student pays about 24 percent of the cost while borrowing accounts for 14 percent and ten percent comes from savings and income. Scholarships and grants accounted for a quarter and friends and extended family gave 6 percent.

The current cost of a college education rises by six percent every year and it costs about $124,000 for four years of college.

A big 90 percent of high school seniors now feel that they should pay for at least some of their college costs. Students are willing to look into many strategies for cutting expenses which include delaying college until they have saved some money.

If you are thinking of earning a college degree, you should also be thinking about how you will fund your schooling. You should begin planning for college during the last two years of high school and some people even think that students should begin this preparation as early as the eight grade.

You can apply for and get accepted into the college of your choice even if you are in your junior or senior year of high school.
When preparing for college, be sure to keep your grades up in high school because if you do not, you will have a much less number of schools to choose from as most college require proof of your grade point average and some will not consider you if you GPA is too low.

Be sure too to participate in extracurricular high school activities. Any activity that requires time and effort outside of the classroom shows that you are willing to cooperate with others and put out a bit of effort to succeed. You should also be sure to take some computer science courses in high school so that you can efficiently and effectively learn how to research and prepare projects that could help you to perform better in high school.

A study was done in order to find out where the 1992-93 Bachelor degree earners are today and it focused on five areas: education after the degree, labor force participation, opinions about their undergrad educations, family status and civil participation.

By 2003, 10 years after receiving a bachelor’s degree, forty percent of the 1992-93 bachelor degree participants had enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program. This also included 25 percent who had gotten such a degree, six percent who currently enrolled and nine percent who had enrolled but had dropped out.

Regarding employment, most college grads (87 percent) were working and most in one full time job. Nine percent were working more than one job and eight percent had one part time job. Four percent were without jobs and the remaining 9% were out of the labor force completely-not working or looking for work.

Among the recipients, around three-fifths reported that the quality of education they received as undergrads was important to them years later. When asked if their undergrad education was an important preparation for their careers, nearly 78% said that yes, their undergraduate work was very important in preparing them for their work. Most also said that their college years prepared them for further education.
