As strange as it may sound, there are actually scholarships for people who volunteer their services or for those who intern or offer assistance in professional fields. One of those fields includes education. Teachers assistants, student teachers, grad assistants and interns are often awarded with tuition assistance and some even get book scholarships for what they do in the local public school classroom. Obtaining a college degree is expensive so many students are taking advantage of these opportunities across the nation.
Most colleges form partnerships with local schools. The schools are always on the lookout for help with tutoring and mentoring and they request college students from the local university to offer their help. The students who assist in these local classrooms are then compensated in some way.
There are similar opportunities in graduate schools as well. Since grad school is very practical, grad students are offered practicums in exchange for full or discounted tuition.
If you wish to take advantage of such a program, you should know that unless you have a full scholarship, you may still be responsible to pay room and board, books and registration. Check with your college counseling office to see what internships you may be eligible for.

In Cape Town, South Africa, thousands of kids marched to City Hall last week to demand that they be given libraries and librarians and that the educational system be improved.
The African National Congress, who is the governing party, began to transform schools into being places of opportunity since the end of white supremacy rule fifteen years ago, but many leaders in South Africa including President Jacob Zuma says that those efforts have failed.
In 1976 police shot a 13 year old boy in Soweto and a children’s uprising against apartheid began to gain momentum. Many of the protestors last week were actually adults who had been children who took part in the 70s protests. Zackie Achmat was one of those and it was his idea for this new movement that is dedicated to educational equity. He helped to found the Equal Education movement that is taking hold in the country.
The campaign for new libraries is the first attempt of the group to tackle a national issue. The group hopes to broaden its membership to include teachers and parents who can help to bring about much needed change.

The great news for many parents is that their child has been accepted into more than one college but the bad news is often the worry of how to pay for it. Some families can get financial aid, and a very small amount of these families will actually have the rare opportunity of two school’s financial aid offers. When this does happen the parents have a lot to think over when assisting their children in selecting which accredited college to attend.
Financial aid officers will let you know that the amount of money your family receive depends on your previous year’s income, your assets, family size and whether you have other children in college. The amount of aid always varies by school and by composition-split among loans and various grants.
When looking into financial aid, parents should look below the surface to see the elements of each offer. Be wary of letters that list PLUS and unsubsidized Stafford loans as part of the financial aid package. PLUS and unsubsidized Stafford loans are of course beneficial as their interest rates are very lower compared to private loans. These loans should be grouped into your unmet needs list.
Also be sure that the cost of attending a school includes books, personal expenses and transportation. If one of these is not included in the total you will have to pay for it out of your pocket.
One last factor to consider is college-cost inflation. Remember to project your costs for the following four years at each school.

Many Americans feel that the price of college today is too high although most consider earning a college degree essential for living a middle class lifestyle in the U.S. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education conducted a public opinion survey to find out how Americans feel about higher education.
The survey results show that Americans increasingly view higher education as something that is becoming out of reach and the study also shows a dramatic shift in the public’s view about the necessity of a higher education. More people are saying that obtaining a college degree is the way to succeed in the United States and that it is a necessity. As recently as 2000, only 3 in 10 Americans held this view and today over half believe it to be true.
It was also found that 67 percent of Americans now say that it is harder for students to attend college due to rising costs. This number dramatically increased from the 62 percent saying that just two years ago. Attitudes on this topic seem to track with the state of the economy.

Many college-bound students find that selecting the right college to attend is even more stressful than taking the SAT exam.
When it is time to select a college, it is recommended to begin by narrowing down what you want most and need in a college. Make a customized list and check a few websites for ideas.
A really great site is The Princeton Review. Here you can plug in specifications and get a list of schools that match your priorities. You should decide if you would like to go to a two year or a four year school. Four year schools are great or the student who wants to be around most A and B grade students and want a college with great resources. A two year community college could be ideal for the student who did not have such a high GPA in high school.
It is often difficult to find the cost of attending many colleges on their particular websites. These institutions know that by advertising their prices they can scare off many students. Use The College Board site to search for colleges according to price tags.
You should also decide on the size of school you would like to earn your college degree from and also decide if you would like to go to college in a big city or in a more rural setting.

There are a few things that you may not be told by financial aid officers that you really should know.
Due to the bewildering aid application, finding federal financial aid is very difficult to do in spite of the fact that there is over $122 billion in aid to be granted to students. Many students miss out on aid due to the confusing details of the FAFSA which must be complete in order to be eligible for federal aid. You should keep a list of all of the college’s deadlines for applying for aid and seek assistance with filling out the FAFSA.
If you fail to fill in some of your FAFSA, the processor will reject your form, resulting in costly delays. It is recommended to use the online form as it tells you when you have made obvious errors.
Many parents who have not saved enough money for the cost of attending several college degree classes tell their high school seniors to not apply at private schools. In reality, those colleges could be affordable as they may be well endowed. By using the U.S. News and World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” annual report that is available at usnews.com you can find information that will tell you the grants schools receive and their average discount they offer due to being covered by grants.
Encourage your student to apply to colleges in the spring. If he gets admitted he will have a better chance at getting a rich aid package. Early applications that are accepted normally come with the stipulation that the student must commit to attending that school-limiting the applicant’s chances of getting good aid.
