Middle and high school students around the United States are falling behind in life sciences and the country is at risk of not producing qualified workers for the bioscience industry which is growing quickly, according to a report that was released in mid-May.

Students are less interested in taking life sciences and science classes and high schools are doing a poor job or getting students prepared for science at the college level. The report was researched and funded by Batelle, the Biotechnology Institute and the Biotechnology Industry Organization. The report concluded by saying that these deficiencies will harm the country’s competitiveness with the rest of the world.

A wide disparity was found among states regarding student performance in these courses in general. Many states can no longer rely on the manufacturing sector and are instead turning to the biotechnology and biosciences which requires a work force that is more educated. The report found that only 28 percent of ACT scores reached a score that indicated students were prepared for college courses in biology.

Students however can follow there biosciences interests by obtaining a college degree from one of many colleges and Universities offering bioscience classes.

Employers all across the United States are having a hard time filling information technology (IT) positions because there is a shortage of qualified employees, both at the entry-level and advanced positions.

Businesses are struggling to find employees to take these IT positions and experts are trying to change the lingering perceptions regarding the dot-com bust that happened at the beginning of this decade.

Job opportunities in computer software engineering, computer support and systems administration are expected to rise quicker than what is average for all occupations.

The House Education committee chairman is supporting President Obama’s plan to put an end to the role of private banks in the way that the federal government lends money to students. The plan is deeply contentious in Congress and faces a lot of opposition from banks that have been earning large profits for handling the federal student loans.

Legislation will be introduced next week by Rep. George Miller, a democrat from California, that will rely on direct loans from the government to replace the federally subsidized loans that are being given by private banks.

The Obama administration looked over the legislation drafts and report that it pretty much adopts Obama’s proposal. The industry wants Congress and the Obama administration to consider its own alternative. The White House, Democrats in Congress and federal Education Department officials reject that, saying it has its base in accounting tricks that would send $15 billion to the banks that the President would order to the Pell grant program for students who are considered to be low-income.

Obama’s proposal would save the U.S. Government around $87 billion in ten years time and this is money that the White House says should be used to assist poor students finance their college degree programs.

Researchers at the University of California-Irvine campus will begin an experimental program at fifty elementary schools in Orange County that utilizes spatial reasoning to help teach the students math. Students offer struggle with math in the early years as well as when they are pursuing an higher education.

A collaboration between UCI professor Michael Martinez, the Orange County Dept. of Education and the MIND Research Institute will use alternative methods to teach children math in the second to fifth grade levels at some under-performing elementary schools within Orange County.

The technique will use MIND’s computer software programs which are game-like to introduce the use of visual reasoning when figuring math problems. This technique can possibly change the way mathematics is taught in the U.S. by putting the emphasis on intuitive and visual understanding of the concepts in math and by using technical symbols and technical terminology.

The U.S. Department of Education will fund the research with a $3 million grant. The trial students will be compared with their classmates throughout the duration of the research.

Mind Reseach Institute is based in Santa Ana, California and is a non-profit organization that specializes in K-9 education. They will provide the software for the research.
