There’s an old saying that says: “Those that Can’t: Teach”. It meant that teachers only end up being teachers because they were not successful with any other job, so they resorted to teaching. School districts across the United States are short of qualified teachers. New teachers often quit after 3 or 4 years on the job and most are not fully appreciated.
The greatest shortage of teachers is in bilingual and special education classrooms, as well as in inner city public schools. Being a teacher in a special education setting or for bilingual students can be stressful, as is teaching in an inner city environment, therefore it is difficult to find qualified teachers for these settings. If a highly qualified applicant is not available for an open teaching position, a lesser qualified applicant will usually be hired.
In order to assure that all classrooms have qualified teachers, some schools feel forced to hire qualified teachers out of their fields of expertise or they hire experienced teachers who have poor performance records.
Perhaps a better way to assure that qualified teachers remain working is to raise their salaries or to offer incentives for staying on the job.
